What is a Keloid?

1. Keloids which are sometimes referred to as a ‘keloid scar’ are smooth, hard, benign growths that form when scar tissue grows excessively and rises quite abruptly above the rest of the skin.

2. They do not regress over time, unlike scars.

3. Keloids can be larger as compared to the original wound. They are most commonly found on sites such as the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and cheeks. However, they can affect any part of the body.

4. Risk factors include being pregnant, being of African, Asian, or Latino descent, or being younger than 30 years old.

5. They are not harmful to your body but they create cosmetic concerns.

What are the symptoms of Keloid?

Ridged or lumpy area of the skin that is usually raised than normal skin level

The localized area is pink or red.

An itchy patch of the skin.

The localized area continues to grow larger than before with scar tissue over time.

What are the causes of keloid?

1. Alterations in the cellular signals that control proliferation and inflammation may be the cause of the process of keloid formation.

2. There are types of skin injury that contribute to keloid scarring. These include:

acne scars

burns

chickenpox scars

ear piercing

scratches

surgical incision sites

vaccination sites
